March 2009 Sharing Time Class Presentation
Week 4—Class Presentation: I have many family members who can help me.
References: Proclamation, paragraph 7; 2 Nephi 4:3-12; FHE, 95-97
To prepare, have your class, over a period of a few weeks, tell you non-personal things about their family such as:
Number of brothers and sisters, whether grandparents live in the home, how many older and younger siblings there are, etc.
Also ask the children to tell you of a time someone in their immediate or extended family (including foster parents or other less common family structures) helped them. Have them write the story or dictate to you. This may take a few weeks to do. After the stories are written or dictated, have the child draw a picture on the other side of the story.
Class Presentation: Display the pictures of the families. Have each child read the clues about one of the other children (not themselves), made from the facts you gathered earlier on. Sample: This person is the youngest of four children. This person’s grandmother lives with this person. This person has a brother on a mission.” Let children from other classes try to guess who the clues are about. When they’ve guessed correctly, have the child who was talked about get his picture and show it to the others. Let him read his story to the other children. (If your class can’t read, or if a child in your class can’t read, you can read it for him without drawing attention to the fact that someone who is old enough to read is unable to do so.)
Next, have a basket of papers, perhaps in the shape of a heart, that have things someone in a family might do to help another family member. Make them easy to act out. Examples:
Washing the dishes for Mom.
Sweeping the floor.
Rocking the baby.
Making a bed.
Playing with a younger child.
Let the children in your class choose children to come up and draw a slip of paper. The child who chose the paper must act out the item on it and let others guess what he or she is doing.
Sing: When We’re Helping We’re Happy.
Tell the children one way their family helps them is to teach them the Gospel and to help them learn how to live it. Ask children to share ways their family teaches them the gospel.
Finish by inviting them to draw a picture of something their family does to help them.
What do you want to do next?
