Review of Through the Eyes of John

Book: Through the Eyes of John

Author: Chad Daybell

Artist: Rhett E. Murray

Publisher: Spring Creek

Although this is a children’s book, it is lovely enough to be on the reading list and coffee table of any LDS adult. Brother Daybell shares the last days of the Savior through the eyes of His disciple and friend, John the Beloved. John explains the events he witnessed as Jesus moved through the last week of his life, beginning with his arrival in Jerusalem. John follows Jesus through the Last Supper, the Garden of Gethsemane, the arrest, the trial, the crucifixion, and the miraculous days of the resurrection. At each event, we glimpse the apostle’s reactions to the events as well as a clear understanding of how the Savior responded to them.

After the placement of the Savior’s body into the tomb: “Soon I fell into a troubled sleep, unable to comprehend what had happened to my Savior. My entire world had collapsed around me, and it felt as if there was little left to hope for in this life.” At the bottom of each page is a scripture reference, allowing families to read together the original words of the book of John.

The words are accompanied by stunning paintings. Following the story, artist Rhett E. Murray offers commentary on each painting, explaining why he chose each illustration, what he wants the observer to notice and the symbolic aspects of each painting. This unusual addition to a picture book gives it tremendous value for adults. On Christ is Scourged, Smitten: “I desired to show John’s anguish over the Savior’s scourging, rather than show the scourging itself. This scene occurs right after the scourging has been completed. The rope that held the Savior’s hands during the scourging has been cut, showing that John stayed through the entire ordeal. The guard at the entryway is aloof and uncaring about what is happening. This is a daily chore for him, so he rests on his spear, not really worried about John. Meanwhile, John’s posture mirrors his feelings. His right arm clutches his clothes in frustration, but his left arm hangs loose, as if there is nothing more he can do. Near John’s feet is a clipping from a thorn bush, accidentally dropped earlier by someone carrying the thorns that would become the Savior’s crown of thorns.”

Both Daybell and Murray have delved deep into their hearts to create this inspired book. Their combined insights ensure you will have a precious new understanding of the powerful emotions and experiences of the Savior’s final days on earth in his own time. This is a moving story that will touch and enlighten every member of your family.
